Follow, First

“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19)

We often focus on the last part of this verse where Jesus says, “I will make you fishers of men.” But before Jesus tells them what HE will do, He tells them what THEY must do, “Follow me.” In other words, before they could be FISHERS, they had to be FOLLOWERS.

Sadly, we are living in a day of “instant gratification,” “instant communication,” and “instant Christianity.” We think we can be godly without first spending time with Jesus. But before the disciples could ever be successful in fishing for men, they had to spend time following Jesus. “Follow me,” Jesus said, THEN “I will make you fishers of men.”

That same principle is true in every other area of our lives, as well. We will never be what we should be unless we learn to follow Jesus, first. Before you can be the husband, father, wife, or mother you should be…you must follow, first.

Are you single, looking for a mate? Are you seeking the one whom you are to marry? Here is some great advice. Stop LOOKING and start FOLLOWING! Jesus said to these fishermen, “Follow me.” Why? Because Jesus knew where the real fish were! And Jesus knows where your future spouse is, too! So the best way to find them is by following Jesus, first.

What is your goal in life? What is it you are trying to achieve? Whatever it is, if God is not at the center of it, it is doomed to fail. So the best way to guarantee your success in whatever you are doing is to follow, first!
