How to Deal with a Difficult Employer

After David killed Goliath, and the women began singing his praises, it caused King Saul to be jealous of David. And because of his jealousy, he was out to kill David. David had done nothing wrong, yet was being targeted unfairly by the king.

So, what do you do when your employer begins treating you unfairly? Let’s look at David’s actions toward Saul and learn from him.

1. DAVID MAINTAINED A GOD “SPIRIT.”

(1Sam. 18:14) “And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.” No matter what Saul’s actions were toward David, “David behaved himself wisely.”

He didn’t retaliate because then he would have been acting as badly as Saul. You cannot change someone else’s actions, but you can control your actions.

2. DAVID MAINTAINED A GOOD “TESTIMONY.”

• First of all, David maintained a good testimony before King Saul. (v.15) says, “Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely…” Saul could plainly see that David was acting better than he was. Treat your employer right, even when they are not treating YOU right.

• Secondly, David maintained a good testimony before the other people. In (v.23) David spoke humbly and honored the king’s position before the other people.

Then (v.24) says, “And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.” Word got back to the king what David had said! Be careful how you speak of your employer to the other employees because word WILL get back to them.

Notice one last thing. (v.15) says, “Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.” If your employer has been treating you badly, it could be because they are convicted by the good spirit they see in you that they know they do not have in them.

If you will maintain the right spirit and the right testimony, it will soon become evident to others that the Lord is with you!
