“Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.” (Josh. 2:18)
History tells us that before a bridge was built across the Niagara Falls, several lives were lost as people attempted to ferry across the turbulent, roaring rapids. Not many people know that the first step in constructing a bridge over the Falls was made by a 10-year-old boy named Homan Walsh. In 1848, little Homan won a $10 prize for successfully fling a kite from one side of the gorge to the other.
Someone on the opposite side caught the kite and tied a little stronger string to the end of the kite string, and the new, thicker string was pulled back across the gorge. The process was repeated many times, adding a larger, stronger cord, until they were able to run a cable all the way across. Finally, they had cables going across that were strong enough to support workers, tools, and materials.
Eventually, the two nations were connected by a sturdy bridge over which trucks and trains could pass. And it all started with one tiny kite string!
Ironically, we read in Joshua about a lady named Rahab who was able to save her entire family with a little red string! The two spies from Israel told her if she placed a scarlet thread in the window, then everyone in the house would be spared when they came to overthrow the city.
Thank God today for His scarlet thread. Thank Him for the blood of Jesus that forgives and cleanses our sin!
