If something is toxic, that means it is poisonous. Therefore, toxic relationships are those that poison us and kill the joy and peace in our life. Toxic relationships are exhausting and depressing.
Here are five ways to tell if you are in a toxic relationship.
1. IT IS A ONE-SIDED RELATIONSHIP
A toxic person will only think of themselves in the relationship. Everything must suite them and their desires for any given moment. But that violates Philippians 2:4 which says, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Toxic people pretend to do things for others but there is always an ulterior motive that will benefit them.
2. TOXIC PEOPLE PLAY THE VICTIM
Nothing is ever their fault. Any bad thing which happens to them is caused by someone else. They love to appear as the martyr and often construct a situation that will portray them as the victim. Those who are in a relationship with a toxic person usually end up looking like the bad guy.
3. TOXIC PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE TO BE RIGHT
Don’t you dare attempt to correct or disagree with a toxic person. They may appear to be humble but are in fact full of pride. Proverbs 16:18 says that “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Be careful being in a relationship with a toxic person because when they fall, they will take you down with them.
4. TOXIC PEOPLE CREATE ENDLESS DRAMA
A relationship with a toxic person is filled with one drama after another. They are often the first to say how much they “hate” drama, yet they are usually the instigators of it. Drama keeps the spotlight on them, therefore they must keep it going.
5. TOXIC PEOPLE WILL LIE TO YOU
If their mouth is moving, they are probably lying! The sad thing is, they lie more easily than they tell the truth. When confronted with a lie, they will say they are sorry but are only sorry they got caught, or else will tell another lie to help cover the first one up.
If you are in a toxic relationship, get out of it immediately! It will do nothing but bring you more pain and hurt.
