“One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.” (John 1:40)
Andrew was the first of two men who followed Jesus. He didn’t do it because everybody else was following Him. He, along with John, were the first ones to do it. Most people will wait until they see if something is going to be popular before they decide to do it. After they see what the “in crowd” is doing THEN they gladly jump on the bandwagon.
But it takes real courage to step out on faith, especially when you are the first to do it. It took courage for Andrew to say, “Nobody else is following this Jesus, and I’m not even 100% sure where this will take me or how it will turn out. But I believe Jesus is the Messiah and I am willing to put everything on the line for Him.”
He did not care about what others thought. What they would say about what he did made no difference to him. He was a man who could think for himself, and he made up his mind to follow Christ, even if he was the only one to do it.
He wasted no time in making his decision to follow Christ. He was familiar with the words of Isaiah, “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isa. 55:6). So Andrew made haste to go with Jesus.
Are you a disciple of Christ? Will you have the courage like Andrew to stand up for God even if no one else does? Will you have the boldness follow Jesus and not be ashamed?
We need more with the courage of Andrew!
