Are You Listening?

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” (Rev. 3:22)

There have been times when I was watching something on TV and my wife started talking to me. After a few minutes of talking without hearing a response from me she would stop and say, “Are you listening to me?” I wonder if sometimes when the Holy Spirit is trying to speak to us, He doesn’t ask the same question.

FIRST—Notice who is to HEAR. “He that hath ears…”

Not everyone can hear. Unbelievers do not have spiritual ears to hear spiritual things. (1Cor. 2:14) says, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” But equally as sad is the fact that even among Christians, not everyone who CAN listen to the Spirit, DOES listen to the Spirit.

SECOND—Notice who is to be HEARD. “let him hear what the Spirit saith…”

The Holy Spirit is speaking and is to be heard. He should be heard because He is God! He is to be heard because He communicates the will of the Father and Son to us. He is to be heard because He convicts us of sin. He is to be heard because He is the one Who illuminates the Scriptures to us when we read them.

THIRD—Notice WHAT is to be heard. “what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”

It is important that you faithfully attend church. Why? So you can hear “what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” The Holy Spirit will speak through your Sunday School teacher and pastor as they teach and preach the Word. That is why it is so important that you not miss church. Because, when you miss church, you are missing something that the Holy Spirit wants you to know!

So, the question isn’t “Is the Spirit speaking?” The question is “Are you listening?”
