Eating ‘Til You’re Satisfied

Proverbs 13:25 says, “The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.”

Let me ask you a question. How satisfying is your quiet time with God? Now, if you do not even have a quiet time, then I can pretty much guarantee you that your spiritual life is anemic. Without a time alone with God, you will eventually become a spiritual anorexic.

We must get alone with God each day, because only He knows exactly what we will face that day and how to prepare us for it.

So, how can we have a satisfying quiet time? Let me give you a few thoughts.

1. Read Until You Are Satisfied.  Notice the verse above says, “The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul:” In other words, read the Bible until the LORD gives you some thought that blesses you. Then write that thought down and meditate upon it throughout the day. Just like some people have to take their daily medications, this thought you received becomes your daily meditations. For instance, the thought for this blog came to me during my quiet time this morning while reading Proverbs 13.

2. Study to Understand.  2 Tim. 2:15 says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” We are not to simply read the Bible. We are to study the Bible, that is how we understand the Bible. In Acts 8, when Philip met the Ethiopian eunuch reading the Scriptures, he said to him, “Understandest thou what thou readest?” What good does it do to read the Bible if you do not understand what you are reading? So, as you read the Bible, ask yourself, “What is the Bible saying and how does that apply to me?”

3. Spend Some Uninterrupted Time in Prayer. Far too often we rush through our prayer time, if we even have a prayer time at all! A.T. Pierson said “He who rushes into the presence of God, to hasten through a few formal petitions, and then hasten back to outside cares and pursuits, does not tarry long enough to lose the impression of what is without, and get the impression of what is within. He does not take time to fix his mind’s gaze on the unseen and eternal.” WOW! What a thought!
