The Enigma Of Prayer

“But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.” (Ps. 66:19)

An enigma is something that is mysterious or puzzling. It is something that is difficult to understand. Prayer is somewhat of an enigma; it is something mysterious and sometimes puzzling.

“How so,” you ask?

While prayer is the most inexpensive thing in the world (because it is free), it is also the costliest; and while it is the easiest thing in the world, it is also the most difficult. And while even an innocent child can do it, some of the godliest Christians can struggle with it.

Prayer is mysterious in that though we may be alone in our prayer closet, physically, we are NOT alone spiritually. There is an unseen spiritual warfare going on when we pray.

While we may never leave our prayer closet, physically, while praying, we ARE transported spiritually past the sun, moon, and stars to the very throne of God!

Yet, while we have an open invitation to call on God, such as: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jer. 33:3) and “Ask and it shall be given you” (Mat. 7:7), there can be hindrances to our prayer.

Praying with sin in our heart will prevent God from hearing our prayer (Ps. 76:18). Asking for something that we will consume on our own lusts will keep our prayers from being heard (James 4:8).

Prayer is not a RIGHT; it is a PRIVILEGE! Prayer is an investment given to us by God, not to be used for selfish purposes but for His glory. In the next few days, we will look at some of the things prayer will cost us.
