“Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” (John 8:34)
Someone wisely said, “We are free to make our own choices, but we are not free to choose our own consequences.” Adam and Eve made their own choice to partake of the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden, but they had no say in the consequences of expulsion from the Garden and the death sentence that came upon them.
The deceitful thing about sin is that once you partake of it, you become a slave to it. Jesus said you become “the servant of sin.” A servant is under the control of his master. Likewise, once you partake in sin, you place yourself under the control of your new sinful master. Therefore, that choice to sin becomes a chain that binds you. Addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin often enslave its user from the very first hit and sin can have the very same effect. Once you start, it can be difficult to stop.
Is there a prevailing sin in your life that you just can’t seem to get away from? Have you made a sinful choice that has become a chain that has you bound? If so, run to Jesus! He’s the chain-breaker! John 8:36 says, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
