When You’re Needing God’s Leading

“I being in the way, the LORD led me…” (Gen. 24:27)

Abraham sent his servant to find his son a bride. Imagine being given the task of finding your employer’s son a wife. What a responsibility! But in this story, we learn some truths about how to get guidance from God.

1. Let God CHOOSE the way.

In (v.12), as the servant starts on his way, he prays, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day…” The first thing in getting guidance from God is to let Him choose the way. Don’t impose your will on God; surrender to His will for you.

2. Let God CONTROL the way.

This servant had no control over the circumstances of his journey. He was sent out by his master, Abraham. The key to finding direction is this: don’t surrender to a PLAN, surrender to a PERSON. God’s will is not just a roadmap, it is a relationship. The more you develop your relationship with God, the more control God will have in your life, and the easier it will be for Him to lead and direct you.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6)

3. Let God CONFIRM the way.

There are several ways in which God confirms His direction in your life. First, He confirms it through His Word. He will never lead you contrary to His Word. Second, He also confirms it through prayer. Thirdly, He confirms it through godly counsel. You will never go wrong if all three of these are in agreement.

4. Let God CLEAR the way.

As you set out to follow God, you may find things that try to hinder your progress. Satan will surely put some obstacles in your path, hoping to trip you up. Sometimes it may be people Satan puts in our lives to hinder us. Other times, there are mountains in our way that make it seem impossible to continue moving forward. God may remove those mountains, or it may be His will for you to climb them! So, pray and trust God that in His time, He will clear the way for you to obey His plan for you.
