Are You Listening?

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if God were to speak to you audibly? Well, that happened to a child named Samuel in 1 Samuel 3. Samuel was a child and had never heard the voice of the LORD before. The LORD called him three times before he realized it was God and on the fourth time he said, “Speak; for thy servant heareth” (v.10).

God speaks to us in different ways.

1. God speaks through PRAYER – Many never hear from God when they pray because their prayer life consists of them just bringing a laundry list to God of all the things they want from Him and as soon as they tell Him what THEY want, they get up and leave before He has a chance to say what HE wants.

2. God speaks through HIS WORD – Those who make time to spend IN His Word, will find that God will speak to them THROUGH His Word. Don’t expect to hear from God if you ignore His Word.

3. God speaks through our CIRCUMSTANCES – Just ask Jonah! Jonah was running from the LORD so God used the circumstances of a great storm to get Jonah’s attention. Are you going through a storm? It could be God trying to speak to you through that storm.

4. God speaks through FRIENDS – That is why it is so important to have the right kind of friends. Prov 27:6 says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Godly friends can be used of God to draw you closer to Him but ungodly friends can be used of Satan to drive further away from Him.

5. God speaks through your PASTOR – That is one reason you should be faithful to attend church. That is also why your children should never hear you criticize your pastor. If you criticize him, then they will lose respect for him and when God sends a message through him, they will not listen to it.

Yes, God wants to speak to you, but the question is are you listening?
