How Thirsty Are You?

“My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God…” (Ps. 42:2)

There’s nothing like being thirsty. Just ask Dave Buschow. He was one of 11 other hikers from various walks of life who were led into the hot Utah desert by expert guides. It was a wilderness-survival adventure designed to test their physical and mental toughness.

By Day 2, in the blazing hot sun, Dave was already in bad shape. The guides noticed that his speech had become slurred and his body was wracked by cramps. This 29-year-old man was desperate for water and began hallucinating so badly that he mistook a tree for a person.

After going roughly 10 hours without a drink in the 100-degree heat, he finally dropped dead of thirst, face down in the dirt. Ironically, when he died of thirst he was less than 100 yards from the goal: a cave with a pool of water in it!

You want to know what the worst part of it all was? It was found out later that the guides were carrying emergency water the whole time! He died of thirst despite the fact that the very people there to protect him had water they could have given him.

This story made me think…how long has it been since we have been thirsty for God? Jesus said that He is the Water of Life, yet how long has it been since we said as David did, “My soul thirsteth for God”?

The great thing about thirsting after God is, He never runs out of cool, refreshing water! He has all we could ever want or need, if we will just come to Him.
