Milk Your Own Cow

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” (1Pet. 2:2)

Years ago there was a Catholic man who got saved. Immediately he developed a love for the Word of God and began reading it every day. It wasn’t long before the priest came by to check on him because he had not been back to the Catholic church.

When the priest arrived, he found this man sitting on the front porch with his Bible open, intently reading it. The priest said to him, “Don’t you know it is dangerous for you to read the Bible without a Priest to explain it to you?”

The man replied, “But I just read where Peter said, ‘As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,’ and I am a newborn babe, so I am hungry for the Word.’”

“Yes,” said the priest, “But the priests are God’s appointed milkmen. Only we can tell you what the Bible says.”

The man thought for a moment and said, “I have a cow in my barn and recently I was sick and had to hire a man to milk my cow for me. I found out that he was stealing half of my milk and filling up the rest of the bucket with water. It sure was awful milk I was drinking. But now, I’m milking my own cow and it’s cream I’m getting, not water!”

Sadly, even many preachers today are watering down the Word of God when they preach. When you pray this morning, thank God that you can read God’s Word for yourself. What a privilege! What an honor! You don’t have to depend on someone else, you can milk your own cow!
