Pushing Your Panic Button

“And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” (Mark 4:38)

Have you ever encountered a situation that sent you into pure panic mode? Years ago, when our boys were little, we took them to an Atlanta Braves game. As we were making our way through the turnstile, we noticed that our oldest son had gotten separated from us. He had not come through with us and, because of the large crowd, we could not even see him!

My heart sank! I could only imagine that someone had taken him. I immediately jumped back over the turnstile and fought my way through the thick crowd of people, yelling his name. After a moment, I saw him. He was scared and crying, thinking we had left him. When I realized my son wasn’t with us, my heart went into panic overdrive!

I can imagine that was what happened when these disciples were caught in the middle of a storm. There was thunder and lightening and the waves were crashing in on them filling the boat up with water. And to make matters worse, they looked back and Jesus was asleep! Time to hit the panic button!

Jesus was in the same circumstances they were in. The verse before this says the boat was about full of water which means Jesus was also surrounded by the water in the boat. Yet, He slept. How? Because God is never in a panic.

You and I do not have control over our circumstances, but God does! When Jesus spoke, the wind and waves ceased. What we need in our storm isn’t a panic button. What we need is a word from the Lord. Before you panic, take your circumstances to God and let His Word bring you peace.
