The Delight of Delighting

“Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Ps. 37:4)

I believe this may be one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible. Some seem to think this verse is saying that if you are saved, God should grant all your wishes as if He were a Genie in a bottle. We know this verse does not mean God will grant all of our desires, because not all of our desires are godly. We can have selfish desires, and fleshly desires, and lustful desires, and God cannot fulfill those in our lives because He is holy.

Likewise, the wicked will not see their true desire come to past. The ungodly are constantly searching for that which will satisfy them, only to be disappointed. (Ps. 112:10) says, “..the desire of the wicked shall perish.” They are searching for something to bring them peace, but they can never seem to find it. Why? Because contentment and peace are only found in Jesus Christ. Therefore, “..the desire of the wicked shall perish.”

But there is a delight to those who are delighting in the Lord. And that is that the godly WILL have their desires come to past. Because, when you delight in the Lord more than anything else, God will give you the right things to desire in your heart. And once you desire what God desires, He can then “give thee the desires of thine heart.”

If all of your desires are fleshly desires, then God can’t give those to you. So, make sure your desires are God’s desires. The right desires are those which will make you more like Christ. And you can be sure that when you desire to be more like Jesus, that is a desire He will grant!
