“And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.” (1 Kings 17:7)
God told Elijah to prophesy to king Ahab that there would be a famine in the land. After Elijah’s prophecy, God led him to go stay by the brook Cherith. It was a place where God would refresh and sustain Elijah during the famine.
Everything was going as planned. Not only was Elijah being taken care of by the brook, but God even sent ravens to bring him bread and flesh to eat each day. Wow! That’s what I call full service! But something unexpected happened…just when everything was going as planned, the brook dried up.
I can imagine Elijah saying to God, “Now, Lord, I’m not sure I understand. I obeyed your word and now the very brook you led me to has dried up! Now, what am I going to do? Where do I go from here?”
Has that ever happened to you? Has it ever seemed that just when things were going right…you are praying and reading your Bible, you are attending church faithfully…then all of the sudden the bottom falls out? All of the sudden the very brook that was sustaining you has dried up.
Just like God knew where Elijah was, He also knew how long the brook would hold out. Elijah’s circumstances did not catch God off guard, and YOUR circumstances haven’t caught Him off guard either.
Tomorrow we will see what God did next to provide for Elijah just when he needed it. If your brook has dried up, just be patient and wait on God. He knows where you are and He will come through just when you need Him.
