Blue Angels

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matt. 16:24)

When I pastored in Florida, we took our boys one day to see the Blue Angels, the United States Navy’s flight demonstration squadron. Watching their fighter jets screaming through the sky—flying in formation so close together they appear to be one, is impressive to say the least. As we watched the jets flying their tight formations, I thought to myself: How can they fly so close together and not lose control?

The answer is: they all follow the leader. All of the wing pilots must trust that the lead pilot is traveling at precisely the correct speed and trajectory. The wing pilots must surrender their will to lead and go their own way. If they are going to be successful, they must follow the leader.

The same is true, spiritually. Just as Christ is our leader, He has given us other spiritual leaders in our lives we are to follow. He has given children parents whom they are to follow as their spiritual leaders. He has given a husband as the spiritual leader that the wife and children are to follow. He has given the church a pastor as the spiritual leader they are to follow.

Just like The Blue Angels, when we follow the spiritual leaders God has put in our lives (as they follow Christ), our lives will appear with Christ as one. Then others won’t see us, they’ll see Him!
