Open Your Hand

“That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;” (1Tim. 6:18)

A little boy had his hand caught in a milk bottle. Try as they might, he and his mother could not get it out until she noticed his hand was closed. His mother said to him, “Open your hand, Billy.” Billy said, “I can’t. If I do, I’ll lose the penny I am holding.”

How often do we find ourselves acting like little Billy? When we get something we want, we hold on to it for dear life. What Billy didn’t realize was that he didn’t have a hold of that money, that money had a hold of him!

Paul told Timothy to charge those who are rich with this world’s goods not to let their possessions possess them.

There is nothing wrong with having money or nice things, but God wants us to realize that they were not given to us so that we might be stingy and hold on to it all for ourselves. God wants us to be thankful for everything He has given to us and one way to show our thankfulness is by being rich in “good works” and being “ready to distribute” to others in need.

Have you been blessed? Open your hand up and pass on those blessing to others. It might just be all it takes to show them the love of Jesus and lead them to salvation in Christ.
