Turn Your Frown Upside Down

“Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.” (Acts 2:28)

The Bible has a lot to say about our countenance. The word “countenance” in the Bible refers to the expression on your face that others see when they look at you. They say that humans have around 43 different muscles in our face, therefore, we are capable of producing many different expressions.

The Bible says there is a direct link between our heart and our face. In others words, the attitude of our heart will affect the expression on our face!

We can have a PRIDEFUL countenance. (Ps. 10:4) “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”

We can have a SAD countenance. (Matt. 6:16) “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance…”

We can have an ANGRY countenance. (Gen. 4:5) “And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.”

We can have a TROUBLED countenance. (Dan. 5:6) “Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him…”

But we can also have CHEERFUL countenance. (Prov. 15:13) “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance…”

The Bible also indicates that our countenance can be changed by others. We can actually sharpen the countenance of a friend. (Prov. 27:17) “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

I believe as Christians, we should watch our countenance. Our faces should exhibit the happy, joyful heart within us. The best way to have the right countenance is to let Jesus change it! (Psa 4:6) “LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.”

What countenance does your children see on your face, mom and dad? Do they always see an expression of disapproval? Do they see anger expressed on your face? What expression does your co-workers see on your face at work?

Ask God to lift up the light of His countenance on you today and turn your frown upside down!
