What Are You Leaving Behind?

“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children…” (Prov. 13:22)

Often, when we think of the word “inheritance” we think of money. So, when we think of leaving an inheritance to our children and grandchildren, we think of leaving them money. But an inheritance can mean much more than money.

My grandparents and my parents have given to me something money cannot buy…a godly heritage! One set of grandparents lived in the city and owned businesses, while my other grandparents lived and worked on a farm. Both sets of my grandparents we very different in the way they lived but they had one thing in common…they both loved and served the Lord.

As parents, we naturally want what is best for our children. We work and work and work, hoping to provide for them financially, and that is good. But, too many parents end up providing material things but not spiritual things for them. We teach our children how to be good ballplayers, or successful business men and women, but we fail to give them the thing they need most…a godly heritage. As a result, they may end up becoming a GOOD man or woman, but not a GODLY man or woman.

When you are dead and gone, what will your children and grandchildren remember about you? Will they remember all the things you missed because you were always working to make an extra dollar? Or will they remember family altars and serving the Lord together at church?

Every day, you and I are building our children’s inheritance by the way we live. So, what are YOU leaving behind?
