What Song Are You Singing?

Psalm 96:1 says, “O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.” When we think of singing “a new song” we usually think of singing a new song we just heard on the radio or from our favorite singer. I am in no way against new songs, as long as they are scriptural and do not promote the flesh. But I do not think that is what this verse means.

When it says we are to sing “a new song” I believe it is referring to the song of praise that comes from a heart of worship towards God. There are no specific words to it; no sheet music that has been written. It is simply you pouring out your heart of praise toward the LORD.

This is a song we should sing every day. The next verse in Psalm 96 says, “Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.”  So how can we sing a new song every day? Well, the Bible says the LORD’s mercies are “new every morning” (Lam. 3:24). Every day we’ve been given new mercies from the LORD which could be the start of another new song of praise toward Him. Every day we should offer to the LORD “a new song” of praise, if for no other reason, than for His mercy, and His salvation.

If we are to “shew forth his salvation from day to day” how do we do that? We do that by letting those around us see and hear the overflow of our private time with the LORD. Singing “a new song” isn’t about having a good singing voice. People who cannot sing a note of music can still sing “a new song” of praise and thankfulness to the LORD.

Every day our words, actions, and attitudes sing a song to the world. Either it will be a song of complaining or a song of praising.  So, what song will YOU sing today?
