When Your Brook Dries Up

“And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land” (1 Kings 17:7).

Elijah was having it good! The ravens were bringing him meat and bread in the morning and again in the evening. He also had a nice brook from which to drink fresh water every day. Everything was going GREAT… that is until the brook dried up! Wait…what? The brook dried up? Why? Wasn’t that the place where God had led him?

Yes. But God never intended for him to stay there forever. He needed Elijah to go to Zarephath, so if God had not allowed the brook to dry up, Elijah NEVER would have left!

See, God often uses brooks in our life; places of rest and times of refreshing. But God doesn’t want us trusting in the brook; He wants us trusting IN HIM! God was teaching Elijah that even though the BROOK ran out, GOD never did!

God could have easily kept the brook from drying up, but sometimes God WANTS our brook to dry up because we have begun to trust in the BROOK more than trust in HIM.

THE LESSON: Be careful what you begin putting your trust in because God just might have to dry it up to get your attention back on Him.

Has YOUR brook begun to dry up? Don’t worry. Don’t become anxious, because the same God Who led you to the brook will lead you to the next place where your needs will be met.
