Why Do You Do It?

If someone were to ask you why you go to church, what would you say? If someone asked you why you do NOT do certain things, how would you answer them?

Do you do what you do because the PASTOR told you to? Do you serve in the church because someone begged you to and you feel obligated?

See, for the believer, obedience to Christ shouldn’t be about OUTWARD PRESSURE, but about INWARD PLEASURE! Here’s what I mean. The psalmist said in:

(Ps. 40:8) “I DELIGHT to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”

While I believe in having Bible standards, our primary reason for obeying Christ shouldn’t be about keeping the RULES; it should come from our RELATIONSHIP to Him.

Anyone can outwardly keep a list of do’s and don’ts. Why, even prison inmates are forced to do that. But is that how we are to live the Christian life? Are we to serve Jesus like inmates serving a Warden? Certainly not!

I don’t love and serve my wife because I feel I HAVE TO. I do it because I WANT TO. And I want to because I love her and have a growing relationship with her. A person is far more likely to be faithful to church when they are in love with Jesus and want to grow that relationship, than they are because they feel they have a “duty” to be there.

So, let me ask you again, “Why do you do what you do?” Determine today that you will live in such a way that those around you will know you aren’t serving Jesus out of DUTY, but out of DELIGHT!
