Why Weepest Thou?

“And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou?” (John 20:13)

It was the morning of the resurrection and Mary had rushed to the tomb, only to see two angels in white where her Lord’s body had been. Just as Jesus had wept earlier, at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, Mary began to weep at the tomb of Jesus.

The angels spoke to her and said, “Woman, why weepest thou?” Usually, when angels appeared in the Bible, the first thing they said was, “Fear not,” because their very presence shocked and frightened people at first. But it’s almost as if Mary isn’t concerned at all about these strangers from another world because she is so grief-stricken.

When the angels asked, “Why weepest thou?” she said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord…” If that were possible, that would be reason enough to weep, for sure. I believe the whole of creation, and the angels themselves, might weep if someone could take away our Lord!

But praise be to God, NO ONE can take away our Lord!!! “Why weepest thou?” the angels say. The reason He is not here at the tomb is because “He is risen!”

May I ask you the same question, this morning? “Why weepest thou?” Why are you downcast, discouraged, and depressed? No one can take away your Lord. For He has promised He “will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Heb. 13:5).

Oh, child of God…rejoice today! No matter what you may be going through; no matter what you may lose in this world, you can’t lose Christ! The world may take away everything you own, but they cannot take away your Lord!
