You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2Cor. 5:17)

You’ve heard the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” People usually use that saying as an excuse when they are asked to do something they either do not want to do or do not think they are able to do.

It is one thing for a person to use this excuse when they are asked to do something beyond their skill level, but many Christians also use this as an excuse for why they can’t change bad habits or sinful actions in their lives. They have bought into the lie by Satan that their past is destined to be their future; that they are unable to change and be all God expects them to be.

“Well, I’ve just always had a bad temper and it’s too late to change, now. After all, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” they say. True, but you are not an old dog! You CAN change. How do I know this? Because, if you are a child of God, you have already been changed!

Paul said, “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:” You are not what you were, therefore, you do not have to live like you did.

“I just can’t help the way I react; that’s just me.” Maybe so, but that is not who God wants you to be. Stop settling for less than God’s best in your life. Take your problems to God in prayer and let Him make the changes in you He wants to make for His glory.
