Just Enough To Get By

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” (Col. 3:23)

I was in a church, once, and they were having some serious issues with the sound system. Some days it would work fine, then all of the sudden, in the middle of a church service, it would just go haywire. We began to investigate, and to our surprise, we found that it looked as if a 5-year-old had wired it together! There were wires going everywhere and many were only loosely connected. It was evident that whoever installed that sound system did just enough to get by.

How many of us do the same thing in our spiritual lives—cutting corners because no one is watching? We think we can cut corners in our daily walk with God. We think we can cut corners in our church attendance. Basically, we think it is okay to do just enough to get by. What we forget is that even when others aren’t watching, the Lord is.

Too many Christians, today, do just enough to get by. That is why our churches are filled with mediocre Christians. The Bible says that whatever we do, we should do it “heartily, as to the Lord.”

When you have your daily devotional time, is your heart in it? When you go to church, is your heart in it? When you teach Sunday School, sing in the choir, clean the church, keep the nursery, is your heart in it? Or are you doing just enough to get by?

Something to think about.
