The Blessing of a Broken Heart

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

Why is it necessary that we have a broken heart at times? Why doesn’t God just keep away all hurt that would break our hearts? Well, I believe there are a couple of reasons God allows a broken heart:

FIRST—Because We Fail To Appreciate the “GOOD” If We Have Not Experienced the Bad.

There are some people who do not appreciate their good health because they have never been real sick. Most of us do not appreciate our eyesight because we have never been without it. God allows us to have a broken heart every now and then so we can fully appreciate the blessings of God in our life.

SECOND—Because We Fail To Appreciate “GOD” Unless We Experience the Bad.

Be honest, when your car is running well, you never think about the mechanic. But when your car breaks down, the most important person in your life is a mechanic. The same is true for a little child. They think that because they have learned to walk, they no longer need mommy. But as soon as they walk away on their own and they fall and hurt themselves, mommy is the person they run back to for comfort.

How many times have we stubbornly rebelled against God and went our own way, only to run back to Him as soon as we made a royal mess out of our life? God allows us to have a broken heart sometimes because it is the only time that He is really important to us.

God loves all of His children, but the Bible says there is something special to God about those who have a broken heart; those who are hurting and cry out to Him. I believe the reason God is drawn to the brokenhearted is because the brokenhearted are drawn to Him!

A broken heart can be a blessing when it drives us to God. Is your heart broken, this morning? If so, God has a special place in His heart for you! Don’t run FROM Him; run TO Him. Give Him your hurt and your pain and let Him comfort you.
